I was pleased to attend the All Sikkim Christian Summit, 2018 today at Jorethang.
In my address, I emphasized the fact that our Government has always upheld the secular principle as enshrined in the Constitution, due to which Sikkim is a land of communal harmony and tranquility. I appealed to everyone to work towards giving continuity to peace and security that the State is known for.
Recalling the days before we formed the Government, I spoke on the fact that the then Government neither gave any support to the Christian community nor did they encourage the propogation of their faith. This is in sharp contrast to the days under our governance, where the Christians have got our full support and co-operation. The very fact that there was just 3% Christians in the population in 1993-94 as compared to 6% as per 2011 census says it all. Besides, the number of churches have also increased considerably over the years.
Appreciating the great contribution of Christian missionaries in the field of education and social work, I urged the community to keep up with this noble endeavour for the welfare of the society and the State.
I announced that the Sikkimese youths are entitled to avail free technical education at CCT Chisopani and ATTC Bardang. I also spoke on the various vacancies being created by the State Government in different Departments to provide employment opportunities. Speaking on the Chief Minster’s Start-up scheme, which provides financial aid to the youth, I said that it is aimed towards making our youths job providers instead of being job seekers. Our youths must understand the importance of skill based education and make best use of the opportunities like those provided by organic farming.
I assured to consider all the demands placed today.
On the occasion I also released the audio CD titled ‘Samarpan’ and the book- ‘Catholic Education in Sikkim Himalaya.’
